WPS3D – 3D Scanner App

The WPS3D – a simplified process application for the 3D scanning process.

The image acquisition can be made using a simple Android smartphone, with the possibility to acquire an impressive number of photos automatically, in a controlled manner, so that you will not have to fight with the various problems that might appear on manually taken shots.

PHOTOGRAMMETRY – General process:

1. take photos
2. processing of photos via specialised software
3. export 3D model

What will you need? (required elements)

1. Android Phone capable of taking photos
2. Storage space on Android Phone, for up to 1024 photos (depending on your settings)
3. Controllable Rotating table, that will allow you to capture Photogrammetry Photos [ **]
4. WPS3D Application installed on mobile phone [ same phone used for 1 & 2]

Note:  Create a photo asset by synchronizing a rotating table to be processed by PHOTOGRAMMETRY software. **

Taken into account the Open source app, released in qpython program.  In our test cases, the app was really slow, so we decided to study the issues. This lead us to developing something new. From here, the creation of a commercial APP started.

Why an open source HW and a commercial App ?

• The rotating table is a remix of an AAscan project that we wanted to improve, adding the following characteristics:
  1. Increase the aesthetics level, even if that means increasing the printing times
  2. Remote control of the rotating table, via wifi
  3. Independent system use, without needing a controlling PC

• Commercial App [paid app] is really necessary ?
  1. Well, It took some time to elaborate and test a solution that simplifies the entire process as much as possible (80% faster than QPython and with a simplified GUI).
  2. To be able to submit the App For Google Android Devices, a subscription for the publication of Android apps in the Google Store had to be paid.
  3. We believe that like “offering a coffee” is more a gesture of collaboration and approval of the sustained effort and work, than a system for making money (wich is not the intention here)
  4. We are open to improve software, based on your suggestions (like multiple phone usage in the same time or autoshot based on movement, correlation with the accelerometer and gyroscope sensors included in the phone)

Additionally, the Rotating Base is Open and documented. This means that everyone can create it’s own software or device to synchronize photos with! So, you don’t have to buy apps, just activate your neurons and turn on your brain! Enjoy 🙂
